Mosaic Fellow PC Muñoz’s singular music-making aesthetic bridges the gap between pop songcraft, musique concréte, jazz-informed improvisation, and the insistent rhythms of funk and hip-hop. His partnership with composer/cellist/longtime Kronos Quartet member Joan Jeanrenaud has yielded three highly acclaimed projects: the GRAMMY-nominated Strange Toys, the iTunes-charting Pop-Pop, and the art-inspired Visual Music.
PC has recorded and/or performed with rock legend Jackson Browne, dream-pop poet/chanteuse Ingrid Chavez, Prince and the Revolution synth wizard Dr. Fink, sonic surrealists Broun Fellinis, clarinet master Ben Goldberg, woodwinds renegade Kyle Bruckmann, Oakland emcee/pianist phenom Kev Choice, vocalist Jennifer Kreisberg of the legendary Native American group Ulali, Emmy-winning virtuoso Van-Anh Vanessa Vo , innovative cellist Alex Kelly, experimental composer/guitarist Zachary James Watkins, the Americana/country project Owl Country (featuring David Grisman and Charlie Musselwhite), and countless other musicians and recording artists across a wide range of genres. In 2018 PC launched a new creative and educational initiative, RIGHTSTARTER, with the award-winning San José rapper DEM ONE.
A published poet since his college years, PC published two chapbooks in the 90s, The Daily Balance (Artlab, 1992), and Half-Truths (Artlab, 1995); his latest is Inside Pocket of a Houndstooth Blazer (2018), the companion chapbook to his acclaimed 2018 album Physical Science. Notable multidisciplinary collaborations include ongoing iterations of the multiracial identity performance piece HALF-BREED, the award-winning Ir-Rational, 2012’s Fall of a Sudden project in Hong Kong, 2008’s public art installation Light Haiku with kinetic sculptor Chris Eckert, 2005’s poetry/art/music project Twenty Haiku, ongoing performances with Vadim Puyandaev and Erika Tsimbrovsky of Avy-K Productions, and ongoing collaborations with choreographer Robert Moses. His writings have been published in DRUM! Magazine, Electronic Musician, Grammypro.com, Seagate Creative, and more. He is one of the featured writers in the award-winning new collection from University of Hawai’i Press, Indigenous Literatures from Micronesia (2019).
PC began his music career in the early 90s as an R&B/Gospel drummer and indie producer while teaching elementary school by day. In 1998 he launched a solo artist/label entrepreneur career, releasing his acclaimed debut solo disc The Trouble I’d Bring You on his own label, Beevine Records. Beevine also released 2002’s CMJ-charting A Good Deed in a Weary World, 2004’s Golden State mash-note California, and 2005’s Twenty Haiku. In 2005, PC delved further into production and artist development, co-founding the unique record label/private recording studio entity Talking House Productions with Seagate CEO Steve Luczo and 5 close music industry colleagues; Talking House released PC’s 2008 solo release Grab Bag. The Talking House facility was later re-christened Studio Trilogy and hosted everyone from Bay Area emerging artists to pop megastars like Lady Gaga, T.I., and will.i.am.
PC was a 2015-2018 Board Governor and Education Committee Co-Chair for the SF Chapter of the Recording Academy/GRAMMYs, a 2015 Dresher Ensemble Artist-in-Residence in Oakland, a 2014 Asian-American Cultural Center Grantee in San Francisco, a 2013 Equilibrium Fellow at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis, and is the first Director of Education & Community Engagement for the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley. He resides in San Francisco with his wife and son.
